The Pu’u O Hulu Hike, most commonly referred to as the Pink Pillbox Hike, is located on the West Side of Oahu. On your journey to the top, you’ll find stunning ocean and mountain range views with five pillboxes along the way.
It’s easy to find the beginning of the trial from Kaukama Rd, just after the 9th light pole to the right side. You can park your car right there to access the trial.

2 Miles Round Trip

There are two trails you can take to the top. If you stick to the left you’ll wind up the hill on the easier but longer trial and if you take the natural carved stairway to the right you’ll have a more challenging but direct hike to the top.
In the video you can see that we took the more challenging route and from far away it looks like we are climbing up “manmade” stairs, but it’s naturally carved steps from rock.
What’s great about the Pink Pillbox hike is that it’s never overcrowded and the West Side of Oahu has the best visibility due to the dry climate and clear skies. We took our time because we were filming and had the trail to ourselves most of the day.
There are a few amazing stops along the way to the top, the first stop when you reach the ridgeline had an amazing view of white sand beaches below and intense blue waters.
From there you’ll hike up the ridgeline to find a few pillboxes and other lookouts before reaching the Pink Pill Box. This is where we stopped and spent most of our time. The Pink Pillbox is great for photos and the view is breathtaking.
You can continue up the trail further to find a couple more pillboxes, however the Pink Pillbox is at a better angle of the cliff that offers 360-degree view you won’t forget.
The West Side of Oahu tends to be a few degrees hotter than most of the island so make sure to bring lots of water. Also, on the way down we took the easier trail. Walking down the steps after the hike seemed dangerous to us.
This was one of my favorite hikes in Hawaii because it wasn’t overcrowded, didn’t take too long, usually has perfect weather, and the views are amazing. Plus, nearby are some amazing beaches to cool off afterward. We did this amazing hike with Jackson from Journey Era, check out his blog post on his adventure with us here.
Where To Park For the Pink Pillbox Hike:
When you turn onto Kaukama Rd, you’ll want to park near the 9th light pole on the right near the trail entrance.
Best Times To Hike The Pink Pillbox:
The best time to do the Pink Pillbox hike is before 9am or later in the evening around sunset. At mid day it reaches it’s hottest temperature and is always a few degrees hotter than most of the island.
