Lanikai Beach is a beautiful half-mile stretch of white sand, where palm trees meet crystal clear water. Behind the shore is the suburb of Lanikai and the Koolau Mountain Range looms in the background. Out in the ocean two islets complete the scene, making this one of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu.
Lanikai Beach on Oahu:
Lanikai means “heavenly sea” and this heavenly stretch of beach is often ranked as one of the top beaches in the world. Unlike many of the other beaches on Oahu, Lanikai remains relatively calm throughout the year. This makes it perfect for a relaxing day with friends or family.
Things to do:
The still water makes the beach a perfect spot for stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and even snorkeling. Head off on a kayak journey towards Na Mokulua if you are feeling adventurous.
Lanikai Beach is the type of beach you will find on postcards. While sitting on the shore looking out at Na Mokulua (the islets) from beneath a palm tree, it is hard not to feel the island vibes taking you over.
Na Mokulua are less than a mile off-shore and by kayak it takes about thirty minutes to complete the journey. You can explore around the islands in the water from your kayak. However, you can only access one of the islands as they are nesting grounds from several bird species.
What’s near By:
Looking down over the beach are several pillboxes, which were formerly used as lookouts by the military. However, the pillboxes are now the centerpieces of the Lanikai Pillbox Trail or Kaiwa Ridge Trail. The trail takes about thirty minutes to ascend and has amazing views over Lanikai Beach and Waimanalo Beach. The best time to do the hike is at sunrise to witness the beautiful colors in the sky over the Pacific Ocean.
Nearby you can find Kailua Beach, which is another great beach for families looking for calm, clear water and a relaxed atmosphere.
Where to Park:
There is no public parking on weekends but you can still park within walking distance. Ample public parking is available on weekdays.
The best place to park is at Kailua Beach Park and then walk about 5 minutes to Lanikai Beach.
Best Times To Go:
This beach is perfect for watching the sunrise and early morning adventures. In the afternoon not only does parking become hard to find but also the winds tend to pickup.
